A Tribute to the music of Ray Henderson

The Great American Songbook, also known as “American Standards”, is comprised of many beloved and enduring classic songs that were created for Broadway musicals and Hollywood films by such luminaries as George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern…and Ray Henderson.

Ray Henderson was a third of one of the most prolific songwriting teams ever, along with Lew Brown and Buddy DeSylva. Some of the hit songs that Ray Henderson wrote were “Bye Bye Blackbird”, “Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue”, “The Thrill Is Gone”, “You’re The Cream In My Coffee”, “Birth Of The Blues”, “Button Up Your Overcoat”, “Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries” and “The Best Things In Life Are Free”.

jean-bayusCreated in 2015 by promoter/producer Jean Bayus, The Best Things In Life Are Free is a musical production that features more than two dozen of Ray Henderson’s biggest songs, performed by a talented cast of singers, musicians and dancers.  The Best Things In Life Are Free is unique do to the personal connection Jean has with the Henderson family. Ray Henderson was the father-in-law of Jean’s sister and the Henderson family’s assistance and archives were key in putting together the delightful tribute. The show made its successful debut in February 2016 at the Theater Works, and has since followed that up with performances around the Valley.

The Best Things In Life Are Free has been described as “an unexpected and delightful treat” and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and perhaps get you to sing along with the songs.
